What is GEAR UP all about?

GEAR UP is committed to providing a wide range of services, such as tutoring, lunch/after school educational and leadership activities, individual and group counseling, college field trips, parent events, testing workshops, and many other exciting opportunities, to accomplish the following:

    · To cultivate a“college going culture” at our school

· To increase the number of students who are the first generation of their family to attend college

· To increase college eligibility and participation rates

· To encourage parents to get involved

· To support a successful learning environment

Our GEAR UP 2008-2015 goals are to provide a set of comprehensive services for students and their families to ensure they receive the necessary information, motivation, and preparation to enter post secondary educational programs as well as to firmly establish new approaches to student support and college going culture that permanently increase college going rates among disadvantaged populations.

When is GEAR UP happening and for how long?

Now until the class of 2015 graduates from high school.

Why is GEAR UP important?

It is never too early to be exposed to options after high school. Many of our students will be the first ones in their family to go to college, which means that information regarding college is important to them and their family’s education and empowerment.  There are many opportunities that are available to our students, if they so choose, and we want them to be as prepared as possible to be successful and well-rounded individuals. We want all of our GEAR UP students to believe in themselves and know they will be successful.
